Emerald Movie Journal

Editorial policy

Emerald Movie Journal aims to make clear, careful writing about film costume. We distinguish what is visible from what is interpretation, and we make changes when a published detail needs correction.

Accuracy and interpretation

We check names, dates and other factual details against available reliable material before publication. When discussing a costume's meaning, we show that it is an interpretation rather than presenting it as the only possible reading. If a point is uncertain, we say so.

Independence

Editorial decisions are made for the interest and clarity of readers, not to promise favourable treatment. A relationship that could affect how a piece is understood will be disclosed alongside that material.

Corrections

If you spot an error, contact us with the article title and the detail in question. We review correction requests and amend material when warranted; significant changes are identified in the article so readers can understand what changed.

Partner material and illustrations

Paid placements and other partner material are labelled clearly so readers can distinguish them from editorial writing. Some illustrations may be generated with AI; when they are, we identify them as AI-generated and do not present them as documentary film stills.

Our point of view

Clothing is part of the story

A collar, a worn cuff or a change of colour can tell us something before a character speaks. We look closely, without treating every detail as a secret code.
